Miscarriage: Causes, Signs, and What to Expect

Miscarriage is the term used to describe the loss of a fetus before it reaching the age of twenty weeks. The scientific term for miscarriage is ‘spontaneous abortion,’ and the key word here is spontaneous since it actually is not an abortion.

This is needless to say that the process of miscarriage is extremely saddening for the parents and also in general. The causes of miscarriage are usually something out of our hands. There is not really anything that we can do to prevent it. But women suffering from miscarriage are likely to experience healthy pregnancy in the future.

Causes of Miscarriage

There are various reasons for miscarriage and it is mostly that the reasons cannot be learned. Early miscarriages are usually caused due to the chromosomal abnormality, that is something being incorrect with the baby. This, in turn, takes place due to the egg or sperm being damaged or due to any other issue taking place while the cell division takes place.

Other possible causes of miscarriage are as follows:
•    Hormonal imbalance
•    Indecent lifestyle, that is smoking, drug intake, malnutrition, having too much caffeine.
•    Improper attachment of fertilized egg to the uterus.
•    Being too old for being pregnant
•    Suffering from depression
•    Having health issues regarding immune system and blood clotting
•    Suffering from thyroid problems or diabetes
•    Suffering from harmful infections causing fever
•    Having physical issues involving the female reproductive system

Unproven factors causing miscarriage include having sex while being pregnant, working outside the home in an unhealthy environment or moderate exercise.
Types
Miscarriage is just a general term and this might be referred specifically to your doctor. The different types are as follows:

•    Threatened Miscarriage: This is the one caused by the improper attachment of fertilized egg to the uterus and causes uterine bleeding with cramping or lower a backache during the early stage of pregnancy. This is the time when the cervix remains closed.
•    Molar Pregnancy:

This is the miscarriage that takes place due to genetic error caused by the fertilization of the eggs.
•    Incomplete Miscarriage:
This is the type takes place when the cervix remains open and the apparent symptoms are abdominal or back pain accompanied by bleeding.
Complete Miscarriage: This takes place when everything related to the pregnancy emits out of the uterus. Pain, cramping or bleeding should not be too much long-lasting.
•    Ectopic Pregnancy:
Fertilized egg getting attached to the fallopian tube instead of the uterus is what causes this. This might cause severe maternal complications other than just miscarriage.
•    Missed Miscarriage
This is the type which causes the pregnant woman to remain unknown during her pregnancy. There is no particular reason for this but this might take place due to absent fetal heart bones.
•    Blighted Ovum
The other name for this is embryonic pregnancy. This is caused due to the fertilized egg being implanted in the uterine wall but not beginning to grow.
Recurrent Miscarriage (RM)
This is part of someone’s consecutive miscarriages and has the ability to affect one percent of couples’ conception ability.

Miscarriage Warning Symptoms

If you are facing one of these, then you should immediately rush to your gynecologist. The signs of miscarriage are as follows:
•    Descending in the natural signs of pregnancy.
•    Back pain that might be mild initially, but later on turned out to be more severe than usual period cramps.
•    Heavy material like tissue or clot gushing out of one’s vagina.
•    Drastically losing weight
•    Brown or bright red blood coming out of your vagina, yet with you having no cramps. But twenty to thirty percent of early pregnancies make women experience this, and out of them, fifty percent turns out to be positive, that is the normal pregnancy.
•    Whitish pink mucus coming out of the vagina
•    Frequent contractions happening every 5-20 minutes interval.

Miscarriage Prevention

There is not much to do in order to prevent miscarriage. Basically maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important. And this happens in the following way:
•    Avoid smoking
•    Exercising regularly
•    Regularly intaking folic acid
•    Eating healthy and maintaining a proper balance diet
•    Knowing the limit of weight gaining
•    No depression or unnecessary stress
•    Make sure to keep your abdomen as safe as possible
•    Always discuss with your doctor while taking any new medication
•    Make sure to avoid  all sorts of environmental hazards such as radiation, infectious disease, and x-rays
•    Make sure to avoid tasks which might cause injury

Treatment

There are not many medical procedures to cure pregnancy. All you need to do is to make sure not to suffer from hemorrhaging and/or infection. Bleeding must be stopped as soon as possible, and in case that does not happen, then the most common way to treat is the dilation and curettage process, known as a D&C. Medicines might be prescribed once this is performed. The among of bleeding should be very carefully noticed, and in case of the amount being too high, you must soon consult with your doctor.

Emotional Treatment

The most unfortunate thing about miscarriage is that the reasons mostly remain unfound and that this badly affects women. It is very important for women to have a very good relationship with their family members, friends and also with the doctors at this critical time.
NEVER be afraid to rush to your female experienced friends and relatives for assistance. You need help, support, warmth, and love, all together, at the same time from everyone in this critical situation. You deserve to spare none of these.
Well lastly, whether the child who was about to come was a planned one or not, the loss is a very big one and a very hurtful one too. But nevertheless, you can always hope for something better in the future, be it sooner or later.
It is very difficult to go through such times in life. I hope you not to go through the same phase again in life. Do take care and try to remain healthy so that you can conceive easily. Make sure you have a good relationship with your husband, in-laws, parents, friends, and neighbors too. Everyone is important to provide support. In advanced, Happy Pregnancy!
